On June 9, 2022, the IP5 Heads of Office Meeting was held in the form of a videoconference hosted by the European Patent Office (EPO). Mr. MORI Kiyoshi, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and Mr. IWASAKI Susumu, Deputy Commissioner of the JPO, were among the meeting attendees.
At the meeting, the Heads of the IP5 Offices reached an agreement on launching a new JPO-proposed project to collect materials on the examination practices of the IP5 Offices for AI-related inventions, which is the first project based on the IP5 NET/AI Roadmap. In addition, the IP5 Office Heads approved the progress report for various projects including those aiming to harmonize patent laws and practices. Finally, the IP5 Office Heads exchanged views on the role of intellectual property in achieving the SDGs.
On June 8, 2022, the day prior to this meeting, an IP5 Heads and Industry meeting was held wherein the IP5 Office Heads and the representatives of industry groups from the five regions celebrated their 10th anniversary of cooperation, reviewed the achievements over the past decade, and agreed to reinforce cooperation between the IP5 Offices and the IP5 Industry.
